When we're raised in homes with highly emotionally reactive parents, we learn peace can't be trusted.

An explosion is always around the corner.
Here's To Teach Your Body Peace and Stillness: -
Our childhood primes our nervous system.
— Dr. Nicole LePera (@Theholisticpsyc) June 12, 2023
If we experienced chaos, extreme yelling, and explosive fights, our nervous system learns to be on guard for threat and danger.
This is called hypervigilance. -
When our body is stuck in a hypervigilant state, we notice every change in mood, facial expression, and we're afraid people are upset with us. The highs and lows of adrenaline and cortisol become our normal.

Being in quiet, stillness, or alone with our thoughts can feel overwhelming. Our body has learned that after silence and peace comes danger.

So we can never fully rest or relax in the present moment. -
Because our body is used to constant cortisol spikes, we subconsciously find situations where we can continue to find these hormonal responses.

How To Teach Your Body To Find Peace:
— Dr. Nicole LePera (@Theholisticpsyc) June 12, 2023
1. Do a relationship audit: become conscious to how your current relationships impact your emotional wellness. If a relationship is constantly brining you into cortisol spikes, set clear boundaries. -
2. Take unlearning time: like any other skill, learning peace takes a lot of practice and patience. If you struggle sitting in silence or being alone try not scheduling anything one afternoon. Do things that bring you joy. Get creative.

3. Block the drama: it's very easy to get pulled into drama (online or in real life). Notice your pull towards it and place a boundary with yourself. Break the habit of going into autopilot. Choose differently.

4. Get into nature: research shows nature has a natural calming effect. Even just looking at a sunset calms the body. Listen to the birds, feel sun on your skin, and practice appreciation for the beauty around you.

You can break the cycle and learn how to feel calm in peace, instead of uncomfortable.
