When we were back in Phoenix visiting my family and the general area I had grown up around, I was reminded of the sheer strength of my will.

Where most any recovering addict would have to leave the environment they picked up and used in for any chance of hope, I stayed where I was still living at the time when I decided it was my turn to get clean.

At any point, I could’ve walked around the corner of the block to pick up any drug I could’ve wished for. I was well aware of this and it did cross my mind in times of emotional turmoil.

Didn’t slip up once for the 5 years I lived there after getting clean. -
Many incidents where I was face to face with hard drugs, whether taking care of other recovering friends, just spending time with friends still in active addiction or dealing, or being approached to sell to.

I was very proud of myself after having that realization. All it takes is a decision and your life can change forever, for the better or even best. -
I do feel a deep sense of peace now living where I’m currently at across the country, knowing it’s near impossible for me to ever return to my old lifestyle even if I wanted to.
