The father wound comes from being raised by a father who is:

-emotionally unavailable
-highly critical
-struggles with addiction
-is chaotic, unstable, or irresponsible
-emotionally immature
-struggling with addiction
-chronically betrays the family -
When we have a father wound, our sense of self worth is impacted. Because of the rejection and shame we carry from the relationship, we tend to engage in cycles that are unhealthy as adults.

The Father Wound Cycle:
— Dr. Nicole LePera (@Theholisticpsyc) June 8, 2023
1. We have an overall feeling or belief that we're not good enough, no one will love us, and that something is broken about us. -
2. We seek connections (both romantic or platonic) with people who mirror similar traits our father had.

ex: we had a distant who rarely expressed affection and we seek a partner who's always giving us mixed messages. -
ex: we had a fun, spontaneous father who struggled keeping jobs or paying bills and we seek a partner who is financially secure but irresponsible in other ways.

3. Re-enforcement: person behaves in ways that are familiar to us. Rather than seeing these as unhealthy we attempt to deny our needs, change parts of ourselves, and do anything we can to be chosen.
— Dr. Nicole LePera (@Theholisticpsyc) June 8, 2023 -
4. Self Shaming: we shame ourselves for not being loved and for being rejected "no one will ever stay." We feel we've lost someonewe were meant to be with, even though there was no true emotional connection.
— Dr. Nicole LePera (@Theholisticpsyc) June 8, 2023 -
5. Person continues to invalidate our experiences (similar to our fathers) and we feel even more isolated, ashamed, and alone.
— Dr. Nicole LePera (@Theholisticpsyc) June 8, 2023 -
6. We find a new person with who will reinforce the same patterns that we're subconsciously attracted to and the cycle continues.
