The Dangers of Following a Calorie-Based Fitness Plan
Very few people know the dangers of following a calorie-based fitness plan. When you consume less food, your metabolism often slows down, particularly if it leads to worse performance in the gym. Calorie counters also falsely believe the only way to burn more calories is to exercise more.

Calorie counters falsely believe your metabolism is static
— Alex Feinberg, Calorie Ignorer (@alexfeinberg1) March 26, 2023
So they think subtracting calories will always result in more fat loss
Except when you consume less food, your metabolism often slows down
PARTICULARLY if it leads to worse performance in the gym -
Calorie counters also believe the only way to burn more calories is to exercise more

This is so far from the truth it makes my blood boil
Because ~80% of the calories you burn are burned OUTSIDE the gym
So why the f*ck are you trying to optimize for the 20%?1 pic.twitter.com/3poDqo6t6V -
Calorie counters have NO way of actually knowing how many calories they're eating
— Alex Feinberg, Calorie Ignorer (@alexfeinberg1) March 26, 2023
Because their estimates assume calorie labels are accurate
Except the FDA permits labels to be off by 20%
So you could think you're eating 2,500 calories
And could be eating 2,000. Or 3,000 -
Calorie counters have NO way of knowing how many calories they're burning
— Alex Feinberg, Calorie Ignorer (@alexfeinberg1) March 26, 2023
Because most estimates assume your metabolism is 50%ile average
And they assume the calories you burn in exercise are 50%ile average
Name me one thing you do that's exactly 50%ile average. I'll wait -
The biggest reason by calorie tracking can be insanely risky is that it teaches you that the only levers to pull are:
— Alex Feinberg, Calorie Ignorer (@alexfeinberg1) March 26, 2023
-Calories In
-Calories Out
Notice that REST & RECOVERY are absent from that equation
So if you're at a plateau, you're ONLY told to:
-Eat Less
-Move More -
If you are obsessed with Calories In / Calories Out
