How Two Typos Almost Cost Me My Job and the Importance of Paying Attention to Details: -
Firstly, when I said two typos almost got me fried, that wasn't a joke.
— Marketing Max (@MarketingMax) April 1, 2023
Early on in my entrepreneurial career, I kept running ads with typos, and clients were getting upset... -
So I contacted an alumnus of my university who was working at a big ad agency for feedback.
— Marketing Max (@MarketingMax) April 1, 2023
And you know what she told me?
"Any more than two typos for a client is grounds to be fired"...
That was the last time I ran an ad with a typo.
But it got me thinking. -
Would I create ads for my own agency with typos?
— Marketing Max (@MarketingMax) April 1, 2023
Of course not.
So why did I keep doing it for my clients?
It's not like I was doing it on purpose.
And then it hit me.
I was too wrapped up in the macro results.
Did the ad perform well?
Were we getting a good ROAS? -
And don't get me wrong, these are important.
— Marketing Max (@MarketingMax) April 1, 2023
But I was overlooking the micro details...
If you've worked with clients, you've probably experienced this.
They notice the small details that you miss.
And it makes sense. -
It's their business and reputation on the line, so of course, they will be more meticulous.
— Marketing Max (@MarketingMax) April 1, 2023
But the truth is, it's also YOUR business and reputation on the line.
You should be applying the same level of scrutiny and quality control as they do
"Two typos is grounds to be fired" -
So how do you make sure you're not making these mistakes?
— Marketing Max (@MarketingMax) April 1, 2023
Quality control.
This needs to be built into your business culture.
Small details get missed by one person; sure, it happens.
But missed by 2 or 3 people?
Unlikely.
This is where SOP's come into play. -
No person in your business should be working in total isolation.
— Marketing Max (@MarketingMax) April 1, 2023
There should be a process by which another person reviews every single piece of content.
A fresh set of eyes is much more likely to pick up on minor details than a person more concerned with the macro outcome. -

Every client is your only client.
— Marketing Max (@MarketingMax) April 1, 2023
Complacency can creep in when you're working with multiple clients.
Instead of applying 100% of your attention to one client, you split your attention across multiple.
Less attention and care means more mistakes. -
If this is happening, it's likely a sign you've either.
— Marketing Max (@MarketingMax) April 1, 2023
• Got too many clients
• Scaled too fast
• Neglected SOP's
You should be giving every single client the same care and respect; if you can't, you need to find ways to fix it quickly. -
Now some strategies on how you can start to minimize these mistakes.
— Marketing Max (@MarketingMax) April 1, 2023
And keep in mind this won't be an overnight fix.
This is a process that you continually update and refine.
Starting with the most obvious (which everyone should use) -
1: Grammarly
— Marketing Max (@MarketingMax) April 1, 2023
It’s never perfect, but 9/10 times it’ll pick up mistakes you might have missed.
Think of it as having a proofreader constantly checking your work. -
2: Checklists
— Marketing Max (@MarketingMax) April 1, 2023
Create a checklist (or SOP) for content, and follow it.
When writing copy, something as simple as…
• Draft
• Edit
• Submit
• Feedback
• Finalize
…will reduce mistakes dramatically. -
3: Proper planning
— Marketing Max (@MarketingMax) April 1, 2023
Mistakes happen under pressure, and I get it; the nature of entrepreneurship is that you're under pressure a lot.
But proper planning will reduce this pressure.
Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to complete the work properly. -
4: Feedback
— Marketing Max (@MarketingMax) April 1, 2023
This goes without saying, but asking for feedback constantly is the only way you'll improve.
The best way to minimize mistakes is by having someone else point them out to you. -
Be gracious with yourself; it's impossible to be perfect.
— Marketing Max (@MarketingMax) April 1, 2023
It's about reducing the frequency and creating strategies that minimize your likelihood of making mistakes.
Why? Because details matter, and consistent small mistakes will seriously damage your reputation. -
Summary:
— Marketing Max (@MarketingMax) April 1, 2023
You should be looking at the big picture, but in doing so, you can’t neglect the small details.
Set up systems, use the tools available, create a plan, and stick to it. -
By making some of these small changes, you'll be surprised how quickly you reduce mistakes and build a better reputation.
