Stanford University recently released its 2023 AI Index Report, a 386-page document that outlines the state of Artificial Intelligence. 1/ Year-over-year private investment in AI decreased

AI investment has significantly increased over the last decade.
In 2022 private investment in AI was $91.9 billion—18x than in 2013.
Yet this is a 26.7% decrease since 2021.

2/ AI adoption leads to cost decreases and revenue increases

Cost decreases:
• Supply chain management (52%)
• Service operations (45%)
• Strategy and finance (43%)
Revenue increases:
• Marketing and sales (70%)
• Product development (70%)

3/ Demand for AI-related professional skills is increasing

The number of AI related job postings has increased from 1.7% in 2021 to 1.9% in 2022.
I feel this figure will be well above 2% in 2023.

4/ Robot installations

Robot Installations 2021 saw a rebound in the total number of worldwide robot installations.
517,000 industrial robots were installed in 2021.
This is a 31.3% increase from 2020.

5/ General Machine Learning Systems

The most common class of machine learning systems were language models.
There were 23 significant AI language systems released in 2022.

6/ AI education

Most AI-related courses are offered as part of a computer science (CS) curriculum.

7/ More women graduate with CS degrees

More women are entering the field.
The percentage of women among CS bachelor’s degree graduates rose to 22.3%.

The total number of AI-related GitHub projects has steadily increased.

10/ High environmental costs of training models

Large models with lots of parameters emit large amounts of carbon emissions.
The heaviest carbon emitter was GPT-3.
BLOOM took 433 MWh of power to train.
