This is a few months ago, but still one of the worst attempts I've seen

The textbook gold standard for a shoulder dislocation reduction is done under anesthesia and x-ray

This scenario usually doesn't exist so I don't blame the medical staff for making an attempt -
Any time there is a dislocation of the shoulder, there will be rotator cuff, labral, joint capsule and likely bony damage
— BowTied Kobra, Rehab Guy (@bowtiedkobra) March 21, 2023
When the humerus (upper arm bone) goes back into the glenoid fossa (shoulder socket) there is a high risk for bony damage to the socket itself -
I'll give 3 different techniques below that should mitigate some of that extra trauma

1. Kocher Technique

This has been around forever because it's simple and it works.
-Bend affected arm at the elbow to 90°
-Externally rotate the shoulder until resistance is felt
-Apply gentle traction and the humerus should reduce easily pic.twitter.com/ZJ8GMIIyZL -
2. Cunningham Method
— BowTied Kobra, Rehab Guy (@bowtiedkobra) March 21, 2023
-Sit in front of the patient as pictured
-Apply gentle massage to the biceps and trap to reduce spasm
-After a few moments apply traction
This method is excellent because it allows the body to almost reduce on its own.

3. Self Reduction

-Sit in a position as pictured
-Clasp your hands around one knee
-Lean back providing traction pic.twitter.com/NX9mzJ6FqF -
Congrats, you now know enough to pop yourself or your friend's shoulder next time it happens
