Overdose deaths are rising, and an increasingly unsafe, illicit drug supply is to blame. Many people die accidentally simply because they don’t know what they are taking. We need to prioritize health and overdose prevention solutions proven to save lives.

Drug prohibition is making the illicit drug supply unsafe & driving the overdose crisis. It’s created an unregulated, illicit drug supply that includes fentanyl and other potent adulterants. We need a public health approach to fentanyl. https://t.co/YINXGAg5gm

Restricting prescription opioids did not end demand for opioids. Instead, it just sent people to the underground heroin supply. Crackdowns on heroin led suppliers to produce cheaper, potent, and easily smuggled fentanyl. Crackdowns put us in a game of whack-a-mole.

Fear of punishment increases harm. It makes people afraid to seek help & pushes them into situations like using alone. We need a different approach centered on health. This includes decriminalizing drugs & investing in health services, overdose prevention centers, & safer supply.

A safer supply of drugs would help address the unregulated, illicit drug supply & save lives. It would allow drugs to be produced & distributed legally with known potencies & without contaminants. This would reduce the risks of taking unknown substances & an accidental overdose.
