A Second Brain is your personal knowledge management tool and it gives you four superpowers:
• Make ideas concrete
• Incubate ideas over time
• Sharpen our unique perspective
• Reveal associations between ideas -
• CODE

Your 2nd Brain is based on the CODE framework.
• Capture - Keep What Resonates
• Organize - Save for Action
• Distill - Find the Evidence
• Express - Show the Work pic.twitter.com/GCQF7XaWVj -
• Capture
— Clint Murphy (@IAmClintMurphy) April 11, 2023
Mine what you're already reading and listening to and capture the answers to these questions:
• Is it useful
• Is it personal
• Is it surprising
• Does it inspire me
Generation Effect: You're more likely to remember information when you write it in your words. -
• Progressive summarization
— Clint Murphy (@IAmClintMurphy) April 11, 2023
You want to capture the essence of the notes in your own words.
To do that, use the progressive summarization technique:
• Capture notes
• Bold the key ideas
• Highlight the essence of the key ideas
• Summarize the highlights of the key ideas -
• Organize
— Clint Murphy (@IAmClintMurphy) April 11, 2023
The Cathedral Effect: Studies show the environment you find yourself in shapes your thinking.
Design a space for your ideas and organize for action.
Separate the capture and organization of ideas.
Capture daily and organize weekly.
Organize with the PARA System. -
• PARA System
— Clint Murphy (@IAmClintMurphy) April 11, 2023
Projects - short-term efforts in your work or life you're working on now
Areas - Long-term responsibilities you want to manage over time
Resources - Topics or interests that may be useful in the future
Archives - Inactive items from the other three categories -
• Distill
— Clint Murphy (@IAmClintMurphy) April 11, 2023
Break down scenes according to five criteria:
• Synopsis
• Historical concept
• Imagery for look and feel
• Core intention and anything to avoid
Distill the essence of each scene into a sentence, expressing in a few words what the point of the scene was. -
• Discoverability
— Clint Murphy (@IAmClintMurphy) April 11, 2023
This is the missing link in making notes useful.
To survive into the future, notes must be discoverable.
The more notes you gather, the less discoverable your notes are unless you have a recovery method:
• Tags
• Search
• Browsing
• Serendipity -
• Express
— Clint Murphy (@IAmClintMurphy) April 11, 2023
Use the Octavia 3 Rules:
• Don't leave home without a notebook
• Be present - eyes and ears open
• Don't use excuses - find a way
Put your work into the world early, frequently and in small manageable chunks.
Route feedback into your Second Brain and iterate. -
• Intermediate Packets
— Clint Murphy (@IAmClintMurphy) April 11, 2023
The packets are concrete individual building blocks that make up our work.
They can be repackaged in our writing, content and teachings:
• Outtakes
• Distilled notes
• Work-in-process
• Final project deliverables
• Documents created by others -
• Work with Information Packets
— Clint Murphy (@IAmClintMurphy) April 11, 2023
Working with Intermediate Packets means:
• You'll become interruption-proof
• You'll make quicker progress
• Work quality improves
• You can repurpose
For example, tweets in a Twitter thread can be repurposed in future threads. -
