Exploring the Ability to 'Drop' on Opepen
Learn about the idea of shipping a finished collection in the middle of image generation. Explore the ability to 'drop' on Opepen and give collectors full agency on how they'd like to proceed.

as you can probably infer from my tweets, the idea of shipping a finished collection in the middle of what we are currently experiencing in image generation does not feel that special or interesting -
some feedback we've gotten along the way on recognizability is also well taken

what we're currently exploring is the ability to "drop" on opepen — and give collectors full agency on how they'd like to proceed (lock or unlock canvas)
maintain max optionality on both sides -
there have been many iterations that I would love to put in the collection but wouldn't want to make 16k of them, feels dilutive and again not that exciting

things we are testing

provably random drops (of differing edition sizes, editions within editions if you will)
collection influenced drops (checks originals ownership influenced for example)
evolving metadata standards (to keep relativity among all pieces) -
basically, I see no end in sight for evolving the art in the short term (more surprised every day at what can be accomplished, exponential progress etc)

the immutability of checks makes one statement, and this will make another -
one thing that happens as a function of being transparent about the process/tools is instant proliferation, but also fast fatigue
— Jack Butcher (@jackbutcher) April 1, 2023
but the cycles of different styles and interpretations are also the how the symbol can transcend any specific "render" of itself -
my first idea was to do all 16k "by hand"

say the line
if no one is an artist... -
one of the most common inputs:

"let holders customize and put on chain"
my timeline is full of custom interpretations, and I would encourage everyone to keep making them, minting them, etc
to me it doesn't make much sense to attach them to the collection for a couple reasons: -
1/ it's your art, you should sign it yourself
— Jack Butcher (@jackbutcher) April 1, 2023
2/ you will probably want to change it at some point
3/ you can't control the context in which it appears if others are minting to the same contract
to third point, us engineering a way to prevent abuse seems like a massive waste… -
for anyone who thinks this is too abstract or complicated, totally fair (it's also probably not going to resolve itself any time soon)
— Jack Butcher (@jackbutcher) April 1, 2023
only thing I can guarantee is that if it's not interesting to me personally, it isn't getting made -
if you still want to follow along, we've got some code cooking and will probably have some interface updates in the next day or so

if we pull edition sizes and distribution from checks, we have:

1, 4, 5, 10, 20, 40, 80 -
if you have been around long enough to remember the semi-perfect number influence on the checks math, the numbers above are all divisors of 80 (the number of checks in the original artwork): pic.twitter.com/O4Qifovk1e

the total supply of opepens is 16,000-16 (15,984)
— Jack Butcher (@jackbutcher) April 1, 2023
odd coincidence (free, 1 per wallet, 1 hour mint)
at a clean 16k, the semi-perfect numbers above fit perfectly -
writing this out has nudged a few pieces in place:

editions within editions, with some weighting given to check original ownership (math tbd)
if you think of these as drops or sets, 50 x 320 = 16,000
eternal caveat, always a work in progress pic.twitter.com/QSn2jJ7xBD
