"How can content creators build a good reputation fast?"
— Joe Portsmouth 🧲 (@joe_portsmouth) June 25, 2023
I get asked this question often.
Because it's vital to selling your future product.
Customers buy from people they trust.
Here're 3 DOs and DON'Ts to building an online reputation: -
DO #1 - Provide free value
— Joe Portsmouth 🧲 (@joe_portsmouth) June 25, 2023
Have a bias for giving more than receiving.
This applies to the:
• content you post
• cold DMs you send
• free products you share
If you're giving away a ton of free value to others, it will get noticed and reciprocated more often than not. -
DO #2 - Stick to one main topic
— Joe Portsmouth 🧲 (@joe_portsmouth) June 25, 2023
The goal is to be known for one thing.
You need to write about one thing for a long time to do that.
I've written about email marketing for over 1.5 years.
When my network needs support with email marketing, they know to come to me. -
DO #3 - More "How I" and less "How to"
— Joe Portsmouth 🧲 (@joe_portsmouth) June 25, 2023
You need both.
But "How I" stories are more valuable than "How to" stories.
Because anybody can google a topic and get a basic "How to" guide.
But they'd rather come to an expert they trust and know to hear exactly what they did. -
DON'T #1 - Expect fast results
— Joe Portsmouth 🧲 (@joe_portsmouth) June 25, 2023
Reputations are built over time.
Answer this quick question:
Which account would you trust more?
The one that's been writing about copywriting for 1.5 months or 1.5 years.
Plan to show up for years.
Not weeks or months. -
DON'T #2 - Overextend yourself
— Joe Portsmouth 🧲 (@joe_portsmouth) June 25, 2023
It's easy to fall into the trap of wanting to be everywhere.
• Instagram
• LinkedIn
• Twitter
• TikTok
You see creators crushing it on multiple channels and think you need to be everywhere.
Start with one channel and master it. -
DON'T #3 - Try to appeal to everybody
— Joe Portsmouth 🧲 (@joe_portsmouth) June 25, 2023
An unclear message jumps around too many topics.
This muddies your reputation.
Because people don't know whether to follow you for x, y, or z.
Think of your ideal customer and write for that person every day. -
TL;DR - 3 DOs and DON'Ts to building an online reputation:
