Be an incredible guest.
After hundreds of interviews, I can tell you – it's harder than you think.
8 ways to be a legendary podcast guest: 🧵 -
1. Be prepared to share examples
— Jay Clouse (@jayclouse) April 8, 2023
Ideas are great and you'll be asked to share them.
But even better than ideas are examples that illustrate your point.
Examples make your ideas tangible to the listener and really help make the show more engaging. -
2. Back up your opinions with data
— Jay Clouse (@jayclouse) April 8, 2023
Hard data helps to illustrate your opinions and ideas.
I don't mean the Twitter "99% of people use this app wrong" type of data...
I mean real, research-backed data that supports your perspective. -
3. Package your examples and data into stories
— Jay Clouse (@jayclouse) April 8, 2023
To take your data and examples a step further, turn them into stories.
Seth Godin is a master of this – he'll answer many questions by starting with, "Well, let me tell you about a time when..."
Listeners love stories. -
4. Ask for the host's perspective
— Jay Clouse (@jayclouse) April 8, 2023
Interviewers love to ask questions – but they love to share their own perspectives too.
And that can seem awkward or interruptive unless the guest invites the host to share them.
This also builds trust in the HOST from the audience. -
5. Pause more often
— Jay Clouse (@jayclouse) April 8, 2023
Sometimes you get on a roll. But if you never pause to give the host a chance to guide the conversation, we can end up on a 20-minute tangent.
When you pause, it allows hosts to guide the conversation. And we may just say, "Please, keep going." -
6. Listen to the show beforehand
— Jay Clouse (@jayclouse) April 8, 2023
If you're able to listen to the show beforehand so you have a sense for things like:
• Tone
• Pacing
• Audience
It makes the final product so much better. And it's a kind, respectful gesture toward the host. -
7. Lend credibility to the show
— Jay Clouse (@jayclouse) April 8, 2023
If you have an opportunity within the interview to callback to a previous episode or compliment the show on-air, it sends a strong message to the listeners:
"You're making a great choice. This is a show worth listening to."
Huge gift! -
8. Share the final product
— Jay Clouse (@jayclouse) April 8, 2023
Believe it or not, most podcast guests make no effort to share the show with their own audience.
When you do, you stand out.
Other hosts will take notice AND you're more likely to be invited back. -
That's a wrap! Any questions I can help answer?
