Fortunately, you can avoid it without trying too hard.

First off, let's talk about why tap water is terrible. The water from your sink can contain:
— Tan Man (@reallytanman) April 14, 2023
- Pesticides
- Microplastics
- Industrial runoff
- Pharmaceuticals
- Heavy metals from plumbing
And these are just the ACCIDENTAL additives.
Other toxins are added on purpose: -
Chlorine, fluoride, chloramines...

I won't go into why these are terrible to drink. There are better ways to clean water other than bleach.
There are also natural pollutants:
- Arsenic
- Copper
- Calcium (hard water)
So, what do we do about it? -
1) Spring/Mineral water
— Tan Man (@reallytanman) April 14, 2023
Your best bet when travelling, mineral waters are 100% free of chlorine and fluoride.
Always buy glass bottles, available from:
- Acqua Panna
- Mountain Valley
- Saratoga Springs
You can also find and bottle your own spring water. -
2) Berkey filters
— Tan Man (@reallytanman) April 14, 2023
These devices aren't meant to create 100% pure drinking water.
They're great for "disaster scenarios" - i.e. making toxic water safe to drink.
They will filter out dirt, poop, iron, bacteria, mold, and even chlorine...
But not fluoride or dissolved solids. -
3) Under-sink filters

Reverse-osmosis home filters are the only way to truly remove everything toxic from your water.
Fluoride, chlorine, dissolved solids, heavy metals, and even acidity can be filtered out via RO.
They filter EVERYTHING, so it's important to remineralize. -
4) Other options
— Tan Man (@reallytanman) April 14, 2023
- Grocery stores:
Some stores have RO filters for bringing in and filling your own jugs. Maintenance/filter quality is a mystery, though.
- Full House filters:
Expensive, but great for your entire body. If you're considering one, you don't need this thread. -
I have more details on each of these methods in my substack article on the topic: https://t.co/MyZiKqe7YU

Bottom line:

If you're drinking tap water, you're poisoning yourself.
And no one is coming to fix your water for you - you must do it yourself.
Consider the options listed here and keep your hydration situation pristine.
